Advances in Geographical Databases for forestry

Summary

The project aims to enhance the production and availability of basic geospatial data to support sustainable forest management. Background data will be available on a new Land Information Portal (PoInT). Downstream “client systems” will be built upon background data to develop customized cartographic products.

Main Activities

Research, Development & Innovation

  • Design and development of PoInT platform
  • PoInT integration with external systems and applications
  • Development of the Integrated System for Forest Management for integration with PoInT

Productive Investment

  • Improvement of ForestSIM® platform for integration with PoInT
  • Development of drone software for real-time property boundaries survey
  • Creation of a mobile APP that integrates data collected by drone, data from PoInT and interconnects with ForestSIM®
  • Improvement of e-globulus platform for integration with PoInT

Qualification & Internationalization

  • Provision of the PoInT platform with consolidated geospatial information for forest managers

Data-driven services & decision support

Results

– new mapping services – land cover map for 2022, bi-monthly land use and land cover change maps, maps of vegetation cover in fuel management strips;

– new artificial intelligence (AI) models: stock classes (eucalyptus and maritime pine), estimated age classes (eucalyptus and maritime pine), post-fire landscape evolution, occurrence of pests (eucalyptus and maritime pine);

– rural fire risk warning and forecasting platform.
