SUBERADAPT IMPLEMENTS PROGRAM TO ADAPT CORK OAK FORESTS TO CLIMATE CHANGE

The SuberAdapt project, coordinated by Amorim Florestal, was created as a response to emerging climate change and the needs of the productive forestry sector.

To this end, it aims to provide forestry producers with tools to reverse the current productivity cycle and recover the resilience that is characteristic of the cork oak forest system.

The activities carried out in the project are the result of an analysis of the main shortcomings that exist throughout the sector.

At the moment, the project is carrying out a visual selection and genetic validation of the plants, with the aim of producing cork oaks that are ready for a new reality of forestry production based on faster growth and return.

To this end, new methods of cork oak production are being implemented, with a view to greater growth capacity and cork production, with greater profitability for the forestry producer.

This knowledge is fundamental in the national context due to the importance of the cork oak forest system, especially in the southern region, and of the Portuguese cork sector, which is a world leader in the production and processing of cork.
