WP4 aims to explore new markets and applications for wood and non-wood products which can meet the societal demand for bio-based and low carbon raw materials, capable of replacing plastics and other fossil-based materials. Some of the most promising new applications for maritime pine wood are furniture eco-design, sustainable buildings, and eco-packaging. In some cases, other underutilized wood species will be studied, such as cryptomeria. In this pillar, new collaborations and symbiosis will be developed between the forest industries and those companies that incorporate forest-based raw materials into their finished products. Complementary, non-wood products value chains will be developed, such as nuts, and ecosystem services payment schemes will be studied, contributing to the diversification of forest products supply, which creates new sources of income for forest owners, and indirectly promotes active forest management.
